Mid Century Self Portrait
An early self portrait by Breton painter Pierre Gilles (1913 - 1993). This vintage French oil on canvas dates from c. 1945 and is a wonderful example of Gilles' beautiful and subtle use of colour.
Gilles was born in Morbihan and took up painting full time in his 30s after being held as a prisoner of war and finding it a key part of his subsequent recuperation. He quickly gained acclaim, winning prizes across France and Europe. In later life he set up the free painting academy 'L'Escabeau' in Rennes.
