Bristol Landscape

£550.00

A realist Bristol landscape by John David Ferguson (b.1932 -2019). Ferguson liked to leave his process of construction visible, so his work often included measurement marks. His work was heavily influenced by his tutor at the Slade, William Coldstream, who taught this method and whose work often displayed the same style of methodical realism. Here Ferguson’s vertical, horizontal and diagonal linear marks combined with the undulating subject matter of the coastal landscape provide an interesting texture to the composition. We also have another work of Ferguson’s, also depicting Bristol in the same style, which could work alongside this piece.

Ferguson studied at the West of England College of Art, Bristol, and at the Slade School of Fine Art under notable tutors Sir William Coldstream and William Townsend, both of whom had a profound effect on his work. He was born in Buxton, Derbyshire but was drawn to the west country, first for studying and then again to become Head of Fine Art at UWE Bristol, finally settling in Pendeen, Penzance, Cornwall. His works are held in various collections including the Arts Council, Southbank Centre, UCL Gallery, the Government Art Collection and Bristol City Art Gallery.
